Anne Hathaway to Executive Produce 'Ella Enchanted' Series for Disney+

Disney+ is moving forward with a fresh take on the classic fantasy tale, with Anne Hathaway joining the project as an executive producer.

The streaming service and Miramax are collaborating on the series adaptation of Gail Carson Levine's beloved novel. Hathaway famously brought Ella to life in the 2004 film version, playing the spirited young woman cursed with obedience who must break free from the spell while contending with magical creatures and matters of the heart alongside Prince Charmont, portrayed by Hugh Dancy.

The new series will maintain the core narrative elements of the story but chart a different creative direction. Rather than following the film's approach, the television adaptation will embrace a coming-of-age framework centered on a boarding school setting—a departure from the original movie but drawing inspiration from the source material. The novel includes four chapters depicting Ella's time at finishing school, where she experiences both mistreatment from peers and the formation of a meaningful friendship.

It remains unclear whether Hathaway will make an appearance on screen or limit her involvement to the production side of the endeavor. Her participation as an executive producer is anticipated to spark enthusiasm among fans of the original film.

The 2004 movie also featured performances from Cary Elwes, Vivica A. Fox, and Minnie Driver.

Details about the cast, premiere date, and whether the series will exist within the same universe as the film have not yet been announced.
