Aqua Bids Farewell as a Live Band, Ending Three Decades of Performances

Aqua has brought their three-decade run as a live band to a close.

The Danish pop group announced on Monday, May 18, that they are stepping away from performing. "After many incredible years, we have decided to close the chapter of AQUA as a live band," the band shared in a statement posted to social media.

The group reflected on their extensive history together, noting the profound impact the band has had on their lives. "AQUA has been such a huge part of our lives, and together we've had the chance to experience more than we ever dared to dream of," the statement read. "We've traveled the world countless times, met so many wonderful people, sung together with millions of you, and shared memories that we will carry with us forever."

The members explained their reasoning for the decision, emphasizing the importance of knowing when to step back. "When you've been together for this long, you also learn when it's time to protect what you've created together. For us, this feels like the right moment to say goodbye, while the memories are still strong, and while the love for the music, the story, and each other remains intact."

The statement concluded with gratitude toward their fanbase: "From the bottom of our hearts: thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey over the past 30 years. Thank you for the love, the energy, the support, and for all the moments we've shared together. Nothing but love and gratitude from here on. Endless love ?? Lene, René & Søren."

Formed in Copenhagen in 1995, Aqua rose to global prominence with their 1997 smash hit "Barbie Girl." The band released three studio albums: Aquarium in 1997, Aquarius in 2000, and Megalomania in 2011. They hold the distinction of being the best-selling Danish band of all time, with over 33 million albums and singles sold worldwide.

The group originally consisted of four members: René Dif, Søren Rasted, Lene Nystrøm, and Claus Norreen. Claus departed in 2016 to pursue other projects, leaving the band as a trio for their final years.

In recent years, Aqua contributed to the Barbie movie's cultural moment with the track "Barbie World," which featured Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice. The song earned a nomination at the 2024 Grammy Awards. The band also produced one of the most expensive music videos ever created.
