Disney+ Orders Aquamarine TV Pilot with Emma Roberts Set to Reprise Her Role

A new chapter is opening for the beloved 2006 teen fantasy rom-com Aquamarine. Disney+ has ordered a pilot for a television series inspired by the film that originally featured Sara Paxton, Emma Roberts, and JoJo.

Emma Roberts is coming back to the world of Aquamarine, reprising her role as Claire for a guest appearance in the pilot. Beyond her on-screen return, Roberts will also executive produce the project alongside Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, who directed the original movie, and producer Susan Cartsonis. The Bold Type creator Sarah Watson will write the pilot episode.

The new series takes a fresh narrative direction. According to the official synopsis, the story follows a teenage girl named Coral who relocates to a picturesque seaside town and uncovers mysterious circumstances surrounding her mother's past. The discovery that her mother was a mermaid triggers the awakening of magical abilities within Coral herself, just as concealed truths from beneath the ocean threaten to emerge.

The original Aquamarine film centered on two teenage best friends whose lives changed when they encountered a mermaid in a swimming pool. The streaming service has the original movie available for viewers now.

This marks another production venture for Roberts, who continues to expand her work behind the camera in addition to her acting career.
