Aubrey Plaza and Michael Cera Nearly Eloped in Las Vegas on a Whim
Aubrey Plaza is opening up about a wild moment from her past with Michael Cera that never came to fruition.
During an appearance on the SmartLess podcast with hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett—published Monday, April 20—the 41-year-old Parks & Recreation actress discussed her history with the 37-year-old Scott Pilgrim vs. the World star.
The pair had been road-tripping across the country while consuming edibles when they hatched an unconventional plan. They wanted to fly to Vegas, get married, and divorce immediately after—all in the name of comedy.
"So we could call each other our ex-wife and ex-husband forever because we thought that would be a really good bit," Plaza explained on the podcast.
However, their scheme never materialized. She attributed the change of heart to a combination of factors: their altered state of mind at the time, plus Cera's massive celebrity status during the Superbad era and his appearances in films like Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist.
"He was so recognizable," Plaza recalled. "I feel like we got in line at the county office or something and everyone started running, and we ran."
She summed it up simply: "I'm pretty sure that's how it went down. Yeah, we bailed."
Despite the failed Vegas plan, Plaza confirmed that she and Cera remain close friends today. The two had dated for 18 months while filming Scott Pilgrim together.
Cera had previously recounted the near-marriage story during a 2023 conversation with Rolling Stone, describing how they "almost just spontaneously took a detour and got married."
