Belmont Cameli Donated His Kidney to a Stranger as Part of a Life-Saving Chain for His Childhood Friend

Belmont Cameli made a remarkable decision to give back when his childhood friend Brendan Flaherty faced kidney failure and required dialysis. The Off Campus star, now 28, became part of an intricate organ donation chain to help facilitate a transplant for his friend.

Since Cameli wasn't a biological match for Flaherty, he joined a 14-person kidney donation chain—a complex orchestration that ultimately saved seven lives. Through the chain, Flaherty eventually received a kidney from an unknown donor, while Cameli's contribution helped set the entire sequence in motion.

During his 2018 hospital stay, Cameli reflected on the experience through Instagram, sharing his perspective on the critical need for organ donations. "I was blessed with the opportunity and privilege to save a life," he wrote. "The fact of the matter is that most of us have two good kidneys, but thousands of people struggle to live day to day with only one failing kidney. Every day, 20 people die waiting for a kidney transplant."

He highlighted the lengthy timeline patients face, noting that "it takes patients an average of 3.5 years on the waitlist before receiving a transplant, and that is only IF they are so fortunate."

Cameli expressed his joy at the outcome, particularly for his friend's six-year journey. "Thankfully, after 6 years of strenuous waiting and anticipation, Brendan has been gifted the organ he has so long awaited, and my new friend Clotilde will finally have a healthy kidney and a fresh new start to life. I am so grateful to be a part of this swap program involving 14 people and blessing 7 patients with new organs and brighter futures," he wrote.

Off Campus, the series Cameli stars in, is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime Video and has already been greenlit for a second season.
