Billy Porter Opens Up About Met Gala Absence: 'I Don't Go Where I'm Not Wanted'

April 21, 2026

Billy Porter is speaking candidly about his relationship with fashion's biggest night.

During an appearance on SiriusXM's Bevelations, the 56-year-old actor addressed whether he'd be attending this year's Met Gala. Porter confirmed he won't be going, explaining that he hasn't received an invitation since 2019—the only year he actually attended the prestigious event.

"I have not been invited back since 2019," he stated. "That's the only time I've ever gone and the only time I've ever been invited, and I was invited by Ryan Murphy that year."

The host recalled Porter's memorable 2019 appearance, noting his striking gold pegasus look from the camp-themed evening. Porter acknowledged that single experience as his only time experiencing the gala firsthand.

Reflecting on recent themes, Porter pointed out that last year's "Black dandyism" concept would have been particularly fitting for him—yet no invitation arrived. Rather than expressing disappointment, he framed his perspective philosophically.

"I'm good," Porter said. "I don't go to places where I'm not welcome. Period. Point blank. I've earned the invitation and it's okay that I don't have it because there's a level that I've reached that doesn't require validation from the outside. So I'm going to sit and live in that because it helps keep me sane too."

The statement reflects Porter's broader stance on acceptance and self-worth, suggesting he's moved beyond seeking external validation from the fashion world's most exclusive gathering.
