A fire erupted at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre in Manhattan's Times Square on Monday, May 4, forcing an evacuation of the venue that currently hosts the Broadway production of "The Book of Mormon."

The blaze originated in an electrical room located on an upper level of the building and resulted in what officials describe as "substantial damage." The theater has been rendered temporarily unusable as a result of the incident.

All occupants were evacuated safely from the premises, though one firefighter sustained an injury during response efforts. The New York Fire Department arrived at the scene and took command of the situation.

"The NYFD is at the site of the fire now and are handling matters at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre. Everyone has been safely removed from the theater. We will keep all parties abreast of this developing situation," a representative for the production stated.

The fire was classified as a three-alarm incident, indicating a fire of significant scale. Approximately 60 FDNY units responded to the emergency.

The production had no performance scheduled for Monday evening. The show was set to run eight performances throughout the week beginning Tuesday, May 5, though it remains unclear which of these shows will be affected by the damage.
