Donnie Wahlberg Offered to Cut His Salary in Half to Film Boston Blue in His Hometown — It Didn't Work

April 24, 2026

Donnie Wahlberg was determined to bring the Blue Bloods spinoff Boston Blue to his hometown, even if it meant taking a significant financial hit.

The 56-year-old actor revealed that when he learned the show could potentially film in Boston, he jumped at the opportunity. Initially, he thought the spinoff might shoot in Los Angeles, Vegas, or Texas, but the Boston option was too appealing to pass up.

"When I got offered the job, I'm like, 'This is a dream come true.' I thought, I'll do a spinoff in L.A. or Vegas or Texas, somewhere hot," Wahlberg explained during an appearance on SiriusXM's Radio Andy, as reported by Variety. "And they were like, 'How about Boston?' I was like, 'Ahhhh.' They hooked me. And I was like, 'Alright, let's do it in Boston.'"

His enthusiasm quickly met a practical obstacle. Producers informed him that filming in Boston would be prohibitively expensive, prompting Wahlberg to make a bold gesture: he offered to return 50 percent of his salary to help offset production costs.

The effort fell short of solving the financial challenge. "And they said, 'You can give back 100% and so can the rest of the cast, we cannot film this show in Boston.' It's so expensive. For the most part, we shoot in Toronto," Wahlberg shared.

Beyond the budget constraints, Boston presents additional production complications. The city's bustling streets, crowds, and tour groups create constant disruptions that can derail filming schedules.

Despite the relocation to Toronto, Boston Blue has already secured a second season renewal on CBS.
