Bride Stands Firm After Friend Demands Full Week of Paid Childcare for Wedding

April 24, 2026

A 22-year-old bride turned to Reddit's "Am I the A–hole" forum seeking validation after a conflict with one of her closest friends over wedding expenses threatened to derail their relationship.

The bride and her fiancé, who describe themselves as financially comfortable, are self-funding their wedding and using a family monetary gift to cover airfare for guests unable to afford travel. The ceremony is set to take place within the coming weeks.

The tension arose when her 24-year-old friend, who relocated across the country with her husband and three children (ages one to four), made an unexpected demand. The friend refused to bring her kids to the wedding and instead asked the newlyweds to cover childcare costs for the entire week of festivities—not just the wedding day itself.

The bride's family will include numerous young children, with no age restrictions at the event. Other guests and family members who preferred not to bring their children arranged and paid for their own childcare solutions.

"We were willing to pay for childcare for the wedding itself, but not for the entire week," the bride explained in her post. She also emphasized that she and her fiancé had already offered to cover the friend's children's airfare. "We want to keep it fair," she added, noting they couldn't extend the same financial support to all guests.

When the bride declined the full-week childcare request, her friend responded angrily, accusing her of being a poor friend and claiming that genuine friends "are willing to give everything to each other." The bride is now concerned the friendship won't survive the disagreement.

Reddit users overwhelmingly sided with the bride. One commenter noted the irony in the friend's philosophy: "And yet she's not willing to give money to a babysitter herself so she can be there for you. Funny how that only seems to run one way."

Another user questioned the nature of the friendship itself, asking, "Are you sure she is your friend rather than a person who sees you as a cash register?" The comment resonated widely, garnering nearly 200 upvotes.

A second response from the same user offered additional perspective, suggesting that the bride's generosity with airfare may have created a perception of unlimited wealth. "Her original request is not crazy (if you are willing to pay for the tickets, why not ask for babysitting instead)," the user wrote. "Her reaction to your 'no' is crazy."

One commenter offered blunt support for the bride's position, simply stating, "Just to remind you: f— off is a full sentence."
