Britney Spears Faces DUI Charge; Plea Deal Could Keep Her Out of Jail

Britney Spears has been formally charged with DUI stemming from her March 4 arrest, though prosecutors have offered her a path to avoid jail time.

The Ventura County District Attorney's office has made details of the case public ahead of Spears' scheduled May 4 arraignment, an appearance she is not obligated to make.

Under the proposed agreement, Spears would be eligible for a "wet reckless" plea, which permits her to plead guilty to reckless driving involving alcohol or drugs while serving 12 months of probation and receiving credit for any time already spent in custody. She qualifies for this option based on several factors: she has no prior DUI convictions, her blood alcohol level was low at the time of arrest, and the incident resulted in no injuries or vehicle collisions.

Following her March arrest, Spears' representatives issued a statement indicating she would pursue professional support. She subsequently entered rehab voluntarily.

Her sons Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19, have reportedly been instrumental in her support network during this period. Recent reports indicate that both have adopted "Spears" as their surname, dropping "Federline" from their names.
