Cannes Updates Dress Code: No Sheer Gowns, No Oversized Trains, and Heels Are Optional

The Cannes Film Festival is rolling out stricter guidelines for its red carpet, with the festival's official charter now enforcing two specific outfit restrictions.
Following an update to the charter last year, organizers made clear that completely nude or sheer dresses are off-limits, as are oversized gowns with expansive trains. The rules state: "For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival. Voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theater are not permitted. The festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit red carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules."
The decision comes after years of see-through fashion moments from high-profile attendees. The policy shift marks a notable change from past years, when celebrities like Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner turned heads in sheer designs.
On a more relaxed note, the festival has softened expectations around footwear. The official Cannes website now specifies that women can wear flats to gala screenings instead of traditional heels—a move that acknowledges the grueling walk up the Palais des Festivals steps, where stars have frequently made headlines by slipping out of their heels mid-stroll.
The complete dress code for Grand Théâtre Lumière gala screenings states that attendees should wear evening wear such as long dresses or tuxedos, or alternatively a little black dress, cocktail dress, dark pantsuit, or dressy top with black pants. Footwear options include elegant shoes and sandals with or without heels, though sneakers remain prohibited. Men may opt for a black or navy suit paired with a bow tie or dark tie. Large bags, tote bags, and backpacks are not permitted during galas, though lockers are available until 12:30 a.m. near the Gare Maritime.
