Cher Returns to Met Gala Red Carpet After 11-Year Absence

Cher delivered a memorable moment at Fashion's Biggest Night, gracing the Met Gala carpet for the first time in more than a decade.

The 79-year-old "Believe" singer stepped onto the red carpet at the 2026 Met Gala held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on Monday, May 4. Her last appearance at the event was in 2015, though she did perform at the 2019 "Notes on Camp" gala.

Accompanied by her goddaughter Jesse Jo Stark, Cher posed for photographs throughout the evening in a striking Burberry creation. The ensemble featured a black silk tulle dress paired with a leather jacket, marking a collaboration between stylist Patti Wilson and Burberry creative director Daniel Lee.

The design drew inspiration directly from Cher's unparalleled impact on fashion and performance. According to Burberry, the look was developed through intimate collaboration and references her conscious use of clothing as a performance tool throughout her career, including the visionary Bob Mackie dress she wore to the Met Gala in 1974.

"She was never intimidated by anything that I ever put on her," Mackie previously reflected on his work with the icon. He noted her distinctive presence during her early career, describing her as standing apart from her contemporaries. "She had the most beautiful figure and skin, and looked different than the average pop star at the time. Most of the girls that were popular were all blonde, and they had beehives and flips, and there was Cher with her long, straight hair. I tell you, within a few months, every young girl in America had long, straight hair with it parted in the middle. The whole world changed."

For her beauty look, Cher worked with Charlotte Tilbury Beauty, which provided an exclusive first preview of the new Exagger-Eyes Easy Eyeshadow Sticks. The product launches on May 28 and was available for a limited 72-hour window exclusively on the Charlotte Tilbury app through May 7 in honor of the Met Gala.
