Claire Danes is returning to Netflix for a major new project. The 47-year-old Emmy-winning actress has been tapped to lead Lovesick, a "sweeping, modern romantic epic" that has already secured a straight-to-series order from the streaming platform.

Danes will play Annika, a renowned breast cancer surgeon who receives her own cancer diagnosis. Her new patient, Nate, is a rising politician. The series will examine the interconnected journeys of both characters while exploring themes of love, sex, illness, death, family, children, health, medicine, and the meaning of life—all unfolding as Annika undergoes breast cancer treatment.

Beyond her starring role, Danes is also serving as an executive producer on the project. The series comes from showrunner Sarah Treem and is adapted from the Israeli series The Best Worst Thing.

"I'm thrilled to get to tell this story with the genius Claire Danes," Treem said in a statement. "We've been looking for something to do together for a very long time and this character, Annika, is perhaps a mix of both of our wildest dreams. To get to tell a story about all the things keeping me up at night anyway — life, death, children, love, middle-age, courage, science and faith — is an extraordinary opportunity I don't take lightly in these turbulent times. We're very grateful to Netflix for this significant commitment and we cannot wait to get going."

For Danes, Lovesick represents her second starring vehicle at Netflix. Last year, she appeared opposite Matthew Rhys in the thriller limited series The Beast In Me. Additionally, the actress is slated to star with Ewan McGregor in Hulu's upcoming series The Spot.
