Clay Aiken Opens Up About 2006 Kelly Ripa Incident: A Week That Changed Everything

Clay Aiken has given a candid account of one of the most pivotal moments in his career—a guest co-hosting appearance alongside Kelly Ripa on Live With Regis and Kelly two decades ago that spiraled into unexpected controversy.

The 47-year-old American Idol alum opened up during a recent interview about the 2006 episode, when he playfully covered Ripa's mouth with his hand as she was interviewing guests without giving him a chance to participate. "Is that a no-no?" he asked at the time.

Ripa responded in the moment with a lighthearted quip: "Oh, that's a no, no, no. don't know where that hand's been, honey."

The situation took a serious turn the following week when Regis returned to the show. Ripa addressed the incident directly, expressing her concerns about respect and professionalism. "There was a lack of respect, and when you're a certain person, you're in the public eye, you have to be respectful of other people. And I don't think that he was respectful in any way," she stated at the time.

The controversy intensified when Rosie O'Donnell characterized the exchange as homophobic during an appearance on The View. Ripa subsequently called into the show to defend herself, clarifying her original comment was about hygiene during cold and flu season, not anything else. "To imply that it's anything homophobic is outrageous, Rosie, and you know better," she said.

Reflecting on the experience now, Aiken described it as "probably the most catastrophic week of my life." He explained that the guest spot came during discussions about potentially hosting his own program. "I'm on the show because I wanted to show them I could handle this myself; I could host something and I wasn't getting to talk," he recalled. "Like, there were cue cards. They had my name on them. So I tried to be funny, and I did what I did, which was incredibly innocent."

The aftermath proved particularly difficult for Aiken, who was not publicly out at the time. The public debate about his sexuality that erupted on The View forced an unwanted revelation. "I was not out to my grandparents and the people in my family. And not only does Rosie call it a homophobic remark, but then Kelly calls in live to The View that day and they get in an argument over it. Not only did she out me, but they had a big argument about whether I was gay and who talked about me being gay," he said.

While Aiken and Ripa have crossed paths in subsequent years, they haven't addressed the incident directly. "Maybe I should feel bad that I have not gone up and said something myself, but she hasn't either," he noted, adding that he carries "the scars" from that week.

More recently, Aiken returned to American Idol to perform his new single, marking a significant moment in his journey since that tumultuous period.
