Dermot Mulroney Reveals Cast Plans for 'The Family Stone' Sequel

Details are emerging about the highly anticipated follow-up to the 2005 holiday dramedy The Family Stone, with star Dermot Mulroney offering fresh insights into the project during a recent appearance on The Tangle podcast.
Mulroney confirmed that the entire original ensemble is eager to participate in the sequel, noting that he has already reviewed the script. He described the material as emotionally resonant, particularly given the loss of Diane Keaton earlier this year.
"Everyone's up for returning. I can be on record. I've read it, I can't even process yet the depth of it, especially in light of losing Diane this year. We didn't remain in touch [as] friends but she was so impactful on all of our lives in that mother part in that life-altering movie," Mulroney shared during the interview.
Director Thomas Bezucha initiated work on the screenplay shortly after Keaton's death in November 2025. The filmmaker has acknowledged that her passing influenced his approach to the story. "I think he wrote it very quickly. I've read it. It's brilliant, and a lot of the actors have said yes, including Craig T. [Nelson] and everyone in between," Mulroney explained.
The sequel will track the evolution of the Stone family across two decades. Mulroney teased the expanded scope of the narrative, suggesting the title may shift to reflect the broader story. "You won't believe how s–t went down the last 20 years for the Stones. I think it's going to be entitled The Families Stone."
Beyond Mulroney and Nelson, Rachel McAdams and Luke Wilson have both reviewed the script and expressed interest in returning to their roles.
Bezucha previously discussed how Keaton's character—who succumbs to terminal illness in the original film—weighed on him during the writing process. "Mentally, I've been spending time in that house where I've been missing her for a while already," he told CNN in November.
