Dianna Russini Speaks Out on Mike Vrabel Controversy, Then Seeks to Retract Comments

Dianna Russini has addressed the Mike Vrabel scandal in a rare public statement, though her effort to walk back those remarks fell short.

The controversy erupted earlier this spring when photos surfaced showing the sports journalist and the football coach together at an Arizona resort, allegedly from 2026. Both initially denied any romantic involvement. Russini, who married in 2020, and Vrabel, who has been married to his wife Jen since 1999, faced intense scrutiny when additional photographs emerged showing them appearing to kiss—dating back to 2020. Vrabel subsequently acknowledged having "difficult conversations" with his family.

When The New York Times published a new story about the situation, Russini provided a comment she later wished she hadn't. Asked about the piece, she sent a text message stating: "This has had a significant impact on my life, both professionally and personally."

Seeking to limit the damage, Russini then attempted to declare the comment off the record. When informed that her statement had been made on the record initially, she objected and reached out to The Athletic publisher David Perpich along with two other editors at the publication. Despite her efforts, the quote appeared in the published piece.

Standard journalistic practice holds that comments are considered on the record unless there is a prior agreement otherwise. Requests to retroactively remove statements from the record are typically at the discretion of the reporter, and in this case, the publication proceeded with printing the remark.

Russini departed from her position at The Athletic following the scandal. Her compensation package at the outlet was subsequently made public, drawing attention for its substantial size.
