Trump Prolongs Iran Ceasefire as Diplomatic Talks Continue

April 20, 2026

The U.S. is maintaining its military hold on Iran as peace discussions remain ongoing, President Donald Trump announced Monday, April 21.

The 79-year-old commander-in-chief stated that he will pause any military action against Iran for the time being, pointing to the fractured state of Iran's government and direct appeals from Pakistani leadership. Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan had requested that the U.S. refrain from striking until Iranian officials can present a unified proposal.

"Based on the fact that the Government of Iran is seriously fractured, not unexpectedly so and, upon the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, of Pakistan, we have been asked to hold our Attack on the Country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal," Trump wrote via Truth Social.

While the military action remains suspended, the port blockade imposed on Iran will continue in effect. Trump indicated that the ceasefire extension will remain in place until Iranian officials submit their proposal and negotiations reach a conclusion.

"I have therefore directed our Military to continue the Blockade and, in all other respects, remain ready and able, and will therefore extend the Ceasefire until such time as their proposal is submitted, and discussions are concluded, one way or the other," he added.

The president has previously noted that the U.S. military intercepted an Iranian vessel attempting to transit the strait, and he has made clear that military escalation remains a possibility if diplomatic efforts do not succeed.
