Trump Criticizes German Chancellor Merz Over Iran Nuclear Stance

April 27, 2026

President Donald Trump has directed sharp criticism at Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz, taking aim at the 70-year-old leader's position on Iran's nuclear capabilities.

The 79-year-old U.S. President fired back on Truth Social Tuesday following remarks Merz made about the Iran-United States conflict, with the German official suggesting Washington faces humiliation in its dealings with the nation.

"The Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, thinks it's OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon. He doesn't know what he's talking about!" Trump wrote in his post.

Trump went on to warn of the broader implications, stating that a nuclear-armed Iran would leave "the whole World" held hostage. He emphasized his own current efforts with Iran, claiming these represent actions "other Nations, or Presidents, should have done long ago."

The President concluded his remarks by connecting Merz's leadership to Germany's current challenges: "No wonder Germany is doing so poorly, both Economically, and otherwise!"

Merz had addressed students in Marsberg on Monday, describing the current situation as "pretty tangled." The Chancellor highlighted the financial toll of the conflict, noting that "it is costing us a great deal of money" and that "this war against Iran, has a direct impact on our economic output."

Meanwhile, Trump and First Lady Melania Trump hosted the King and Queen of England at the White House on Tuesday as part of their state visit to Washington, DC.
