Trump Recounts Melania's Disapproval of His Dancing to 'Y.M.C.A.' at Florida Rally

Donald Trump opened up about his dance moves during a Friday rally in Sumterville, Florida on May 1.
The 79-year-old President shared details about his habit of dancing to the Village People's 1978 classic "Y.M.C.A.," which he described as the "gay national anthem." He explained that his wife, Melania Trump, strongly disapproves of the practice.
"She hates when I dance to what's sometimes referred to as the gay national anthem, you know," Trump said. "She hates it."
Trump's fist-pumping dance style has become widely recognized over the years, though his movements differ significantly from the traditional hand gestures typically performed to accompany the song.
"We love that song," he added, recounting Melania's objections. "But she goes, 'Darling, please.' You know, she's a very elegant woman. She goes, 'Darling, please, don't dance. It's not presidential.'"
Trump responded to his wife's criticism with a quip about his political standing. "I said, 'It may not be presidential, but I'm leading by 20 points in the polls.'"
The President then claimed credit for reviving the song's chart fortunes. "You know, that song was No. 5 32 years ago, and it went to No. 1 32 years later," he stated. "There's never been anything like it. It never hit No. 1. It was No. 5 32 years ago, and it went to No. 1 for months during the last months of the campaign."
Trump's recollection of the song's chart history contains inaccuracies. "Y.M.C.A." was released in October 1978—48 years prior to his comments, not 32 years—and initially peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1979, not No. 5. While the track did gain renewed popularity during his 2024 presidential campaign, it reached No. 1 on the Billboard Dance Digital Song Sales chart rather than the main Billboard Hot 100 chart.
