Doug McCain, Former Navy Pilot and Son of Late Senator John McCain, Dies at 66

Doug McCain, the oldest son of late Senator John McCain, has died suddenly over the weekend at age 66.
Meghan McCain announced her brother's passing on social media, sharing memories of their time together. "I am deeply saddened to share the news of my brother Doug McCain's sudden passing. He was a truly wonderful, joyful man who supported me throughout my life. He brought humor, fun and great conversation to every room. I will cherish our memories together. Our prayers are with his wife Ashley and children Caroline and Shepp," she wrote.
The McCain Institute also released a statement on Saturday, May 23, honoring Doug's memory and military service. "We extend our condolences to the McCain family following the passing of Douglas "Doug" Shepp McCain, the eldest son of John McCain. A Navy pilot like his father, Doug will be remembered as a patriot and friend to the many alumni of Sen. McCain's Institute, campaigns & Senate staff," the organization said.
No cause of death has been disclosed at this time.
Born to John McCain and his first wife Carol Shepp—whom McCain adopted following their 1965 marriage—Doug was part of the senator's blended family. After John McCain and Carol divorced, he went on to marry Cindy McCain. Despite the family's complexity, Doug maintained cordial relationships across the household.
"I have a good relationship with Cindy, as do my brother and sister. And I have a good relationship with Meghan, Jack, Jimmy and Bridget. We're not extraordinarily close, but if I ever need something, I know how to reach them," Doug reflected on his extended family connections in a previous interview.
John McCain, Doug's father, passed away in 2018 following a battle with brain cancer. Doug is survived by his wife Ashley and their two children, Caroline and Shepp.
