Elle Showrunners Detail Reese Witherspoon's Hands-On Role in Season One Writers' Room

Reese Witherspoon played an active role in shaping the creative direction of Elle season one, according to the show's creative leadership.
As an executive producer on the Prime Video prequel series—which explores her Legally Blonde character Elle Woods during her high school years—the 50-year-old star brought valuable perspective to the writers' room process before production kicked off.
Co-showrunner Caroline Dries explained to People how the collaboration unfolded. "She wasn't in the weeds with us that much with the story. She read the outline for season 1 and came in and asked questions about it," Dries said. "And then she would just throw out these nuggets of gold about her experience, or she'd be like, 'What about this or this?' And you're just like, Yes, please!'"
Witherspoon focused on authenticity, particularly regarding the "high school experience" of the 1990s era. "She knew that we would do the Easter Eggs," Dries noted, referencing callbacks to the original film franchise.
Co-showrunner Laura Kittrell underscored that Witherspoon contributed "specific '90s experiences and feelings" that proved essential to the writing process. The creative team valued these contributions, with Dries emphasizing that their role involved taking Witherspoon's ideas and expanding upon them.
Despite her involvement, Witherspoon maintained professional boundaries. "She kept a really respectful distance, and just let us do what we wanted to do," Dries said of the star's approach.
