Fans of the newly launched Prime Video series Off Campus have noticed a striking detail on lead character Garrett Graham: a Latin phrase tattooed across his back.

The ink reads "Nullum Gratuitum Prandium," which translates to "there is no free lunch." It's a deliberate departure from the source material, where Garrett's character sports a fire tattoo on his arm instead.

Actor Belmont Cameli, who portrays Garrett, championed the change himself. In a recent interview with Teen Vogue, he revealed the tattoo's profound meaning and its connection to his own past.

"What essentially it means is that everything in life is earned. Everything has a cost; nothing comes free," Cameli explained. The phrase held special significance for him—it served as the mantra of his high school wrestling team.

For the character, the tattoo reinforces a core aspect of Garrett's personality. "It's a core tenet of who [Garrett] is that he refuses to let anything be handed to him. He wants to deserve all of the accolades and achievements that he has," Cameli said.

The placement of the tattoo carries intentional weight as well. Positioned between the shoulders, it remains hidden beneath Garrett's jersey—which displays his surname—but becomes visible when he removes his shirt. "When he peels the jersey off, just on his own skin, you get to see that phrase really encapsulate who he is," Cameli noted.

The tattoo also serves a narrative function, foreshadowing elements of Garrett's storyline as the season progresses.
