George Lucas is stepping back into the spotlight with a special voice acting role in the upcoming animated film Minions & Monsters, marking his return from retirement.

The iconic filmmaker will contribute a vocal performance to Illumination's latest installment in the wildly popular Despicable Me franchise. Minions & Monsters is set to premiere in theaters on July 1, 2026.

According to Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri, the collaboration came about after he connected with Lucas roughly two years prior. During their meeting, Meledandri discovered that Lucas was a devoted fan of Illumination's work, with particular enthusiasm for Despicable Me and the Minions films.

"It was such a thrill to learn that and then to share it with the team, because obviously he's among a very small group of people who the entire studio shares a level of respect for that is just off the charts," Meledandri shared.

The concept evolved into Lucas playing himself in the film, though the character also involves a connection to legendary actor and director Orson Welles. Meledandri expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, noting that Lucas has already begun discussing potential roles for future Minions installments.

"It was incredible. So, we're thrilled to have him in the film. I saw him recently, and he's already talking to me about the role he wants to do next in the next Minions movie. So, it's pretty incredible," the CEO stated.
