At 80 years old, Goldie Hawn is candid about her extended break from the silver screen. The acclaimed actress last appeared in a movie in 2020 with The Christmas Chronicles 2, and she's now opening up about the reasons behind her absence from filmmaking.

In a conversation with People, Hawn pinpointed the core issue: finding the right material. "It's about the content," she explained. "Acting for acting's sake, taking things… I've read a lot of shows, a lot of scripts that I didn't like or I didn't think I'd fit."

The Death Becomes Her star emphasized that her career accomplishments speak for themselves. "The one thing about acting is that I've done it, and I had a great career, and I honor that," she reflected. What she's searching for now is something that would genuinely captivate her. "I would love to get a material that could actually be like, 'Oh my God, I want this so bad. This is so funny. She's so crazy. She's so interesting.' But I haven't come across it," she said.

While Hawn hasn't ruled out a return to acting entirely, she's selective about what might bring her back. "If somebody came up with a really cool, funny script…I think it would be great," she noted.

The possibility of collaborating with her family has also captured her imagination. Her daughter Kate Hudson recently suggested the idea of creating something specifically for the two of them to star in together. "I would love that. And the two of us have thought a lot about it," Hawn responded, describing the prospect as "lots of fun." She also mentioned the potential of working with her sons Oliver Hudson and Wyatt Russell, who are both talented performers.

Still, Hawn tempered expectations about a family project actually materializing. "We're never going to do it, but it's such a great idea because we have so much talent. Never say never, because that could happen at any time," she shared.

Beyond her selective approach to acting roles, Hawn has embraced a broader philosophy about how to spend her time. "I think ultimately every life has to have its sections. Doing the same thing over and over again for your whole life is not as interesting to me," she explained. She recalled making this conscious decision around age 55, asking herself what she wanted to pursue in the next chapter of her life. "I knew that there was more out there to learn and to do," she added.

Though Hawn has stepped back from traditional film roles, she did recently participate in I'm Chevy Chase and You're Not, a 2026 documentary examining the life and career of Chevy Chase, appearing as herself in the project.
