Grey's Anatomy Season 22 Finale Brings Engagement Twist for Meredith and Nick

The season 22 finale of Grey's Anatomy delivered a major romantic milestone when Meredith Grey and Nick Marsh got engaged in an unexpected turn of events.
The episode marked the exit of Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman, who departed the show with a fresh start together in Paris. But before the finale wrapped, another couple reached a pivotal moment.
Following a bridge collapse that left Nick hospitalized, Meredith made her move at his bedside. As he regained consciousness, she leaned in and asked him to marry her. When Nick questioned the severity of his injuries, Meredith opened up about her fears of loss and her realization that marriage status wouldn't shield her from heartbreak. "I don't want my fear to get in the way of that anymore," she told him, expressing her desire to build their life together without reservation.
Nick, who first met Meredith as a patient during season 14, revealed he'd harbored marriage aspirations since that initial hospital encounter. He accepted her proposal on the spot.
Showrunner Meg Marinis confirmed the engagement was mapped out well before the finale aired. She explained to Variety that the proposal idea came early in the season's planning stages, with the creative team intentionally building toward this moment. A mid-season episode featuring Nick's sister provided crucial insight into his desire for marriage and domestic happiness—dreams that had previously been derailed.
Marinis noted that Meredith's journey to this point reflected her complex history with marriage. Her reluctance stemmed partly from her traumatic loss of Derek, making the prospect of another spouse's potential death feel unbearable. Yet watching Nick nearly slip away forced a recalibration of her thinking. "It doesn't matter if we're married or not. It still hurts," Marinis explained of Meredith's realization. "So why not give him this thing he wants?"
The showrunner emphasized that Nick's consistent devotion—relocating multiple times and supporting Meredith's career ambitions—made the gesture feel like an appropriate reciprocation of his loyalty and love.
Viewers can anticipate a wedding storyline when the show returns for season 23.
