Grey's Anatomy Says Goodbye to Owen and Teddy with Paris-Bound Happy Ending

The season 22 finale of Grey's Anatomy, which aired on ABC, resolved the fates of two major characters as departing cast members Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver exited the long-running medical drama.

Going into the final episode, Dr. Owen Hunt and Dr. Teddy Altman appeared to be in a solid place romantically, though their relationship had weathered recent turbulence. A significant complication emerged when Teddy revealed she was considering a position in Paris just as Owen prepared to express his deep feelings for her. His initial response proved disappointing, prompting him to leave an apologetic voicemail that was interrupted when he became caught up in a bridge collapse.

Owen not only survived the disaster but also played a crucial role in rescuing an entire family trapped in the incident.

The resolution came when Owen told Teddy to accept the Paris opportunity, pledging to relocate there with her and their children. The pair received the happy ending fans had been awaiting.

Showrunner Meg Marinis discussed the creative choices behind the departure during a post-episode conversation. She explained that the writing team had explored multiple directions, including storylines that would have resulted in character deaths—a Grey's Anatomy trademark. However, Marinis felt committed to honoring the full character development of two actors who had been central to the show for years. She emphasized how Owen's heroism at the bridge, followed by his decision to support Teddy's ambitions, completed a meaningful arc for both characters. She also noted the poetic symmetry of Teddy finally being pursued by Owen after following him for so long, and the opportunity for her to advance her career while maintaining her personal happiness.

Marinis also expressed her desire to leave the door open for hope, preferring to imagine the characters building a new life in Paris rather than concluding their journeys in a more permanent fashion.

The departures stemmed from financial pressures facing network television. Marinis told Variety that the decision came shortly after the new year, as budget constraints have forced major adjustments across the industry. She acknowledged the emotional difficulty of writing and filming the exit, given her close relationships with both McKidd and Raver. She noted that McKidd had directed numerous episodes she had written. Ultimately, she determined that exiting the characters together made narrative sense given where they stood in their lives, and she wanted them to achieve happiness—even if that meant leaving Seattle behind.

Looking ahead, McKidd shared his plans in an interview with Variety. He expressed enthusiasm about returning to theater after an extended absence and noted he has approximately 15 projects in development. His production company recently secured a deal with STV, with several projects nearing green light status. He plans to direct, produce, and act in various ventures while continuing to hone his craft. He also mentioned recently completing work on Highlander, describing the experience of returning to period drama as exhilarating. Additionally, he's set to begin filming The Only Suspect, a psychological thriller adapted from a novel, which he characterized as tautly written with an exceptional cast and director.

Raver similarly outlined her future endeavors in her Variety interview. She expressed strong interest in continuing to direct and revealed she has acquired the rights to a book featuring a compelling female protagonist. She plans to develop this project as both director and producer while seeking out opportunities to collaborate with talented industry professionals she admires.
