Gwendoline Christie Makes Statement at Met Gala 2026 With Artistic Face Mask Accessory

Gwendoline Christie arrived at the 2026 Met Gala on Monday, May 4, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City with an unforgettable fashion moment—a custom mask bearing her own likeness.
The British actress wore a gown by designer Giles Deacon and carried an accessory created by renowned British YBA artist Gillian Wearing, winner of the 1997 Turner Prize. She completed the look with Herbert Levine shoes.
For Christie, this Met Gala appearance marked her third attendance at the event since her debut in 2023. The choice to wear Deacon held special significance for the Game of Thrones alum. "I've wanted to wear Giles for the Met Gala since before I was even in a relationship with Giles, and that's 13 years ago," she shared with Vogue. "So this has been a long time coming."
The dress itself drew inspiration from multiple artistic influences. The cinched waist and mermaid silhouette referenced the work of painter John Singer Sargent, while British surrealist photographer Madame Yevonde's distinctive style shaped the overall aesthetic. Christie discovered Yevonde's photography while assisting a friend at Central Saint Martins. "I was fascinated by her photos," she noted.
New York poet and photographer Ira Cohen also influenced the design of the gown.
This year's Met Gala centered on the theme "Fashion is Art," celebrating the museum's Costume Art exhibition, which examines "the 'centrality of the dressed body' through depictions and interpretations of the human form in the Met's extensive collection." The event's co-chairs included Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and former Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.
