Gracie Cochrane Departs HBO's Harry Potter Series After Season One, Recasting Underway

Gracie Cochrane will not be returning to HBO's Harry Potter television series beyond its inaugural season. The young actress, who played Ron Weasley's sister Ginny in the first installment, has decided to step away from the role ahead of season two.

The first season, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, is slated to premiere this December. While Cochrane will appear in the upcoming holiday release, her time with the series concludes there. The character of Ginny Weasley becomes increasingly important to the narrative in the Chamber of Secrets storyline, prompting the need for a new casting.

HBO greenlit the series for a second season earlier this spring, though the studio has yet to announce who will assume the Ginny Weasley role moving forward.

In a statement provided to outlets, Cochrane's family cited "unforeseen circumstances" as the reason for her exit. "Gracie has made the challenging decision to step away from her role as Ginny Weasley in the HBO Harry Potter series after season one," the statement read. "Her time as part of the Harry Potter world has been truly wonderful, and she is deeply grateful to casting director Lucy Bevan and the entire production team for creating such an unforgettable experience. Gracie is very excited about the opportunities her future holds."

HBO released its own statement supporting the decision. "We support Gracie Cochrane and her family's decision not to return for the next season of HBO's Harry Potter series, and we are grateful for her work on season one of the show," the network said. "We wish Gracie and her family the best."

The series features an ensemble of emerging talent alongside established names. Dominic McLaughlin plays Harry Potter, with Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The supporting cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor Minerva McGonagall, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, and Paapa Essiedu as Professor Severus Snape.
