Hayden Panettiere Opens Up About Frightening Encounter at 18 in New Memoir

Hayden Panettiere has shared details about a harrowing experience from her teenage years during an interview on Jay Shetty's On Purpose podcast on May 11, promoting her upcoming memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning.
The 36-year-old actress recounted being placed in a disturbing situation while aboard a boat at age 18. Jay Shetty noted that Panettiere writes about being taken onto a vessel by a friend, led into a room with an older man, and essentially pressured to engage in sexual acts.
Panettiere reflected on how she perceived herself as mature at the time, despite her youth. "The fact that I was 18, even though I'd lived such a huge life and I thought I was oh so mature at 18 … scientifically, your frontal lobes don't develop until we're what, 25, 26?" she explained, noting that this developmental reality meant she couldn't fully grasp the danger she faced, even if she believed she could make sound decisions.
She described how her understanding of the situation transformed once she recognized the peril. "My perspective completely shifted," she said, "but by then, I was quite literally out to sea."
The Heroes actress emphasized the element of surprise, explaining that nothing had signaled what was about to unfold. The person who orchestrated the encounter was someone she had relied upon and viewed as protective and supportive.
Panettiere recalled being brought downstairs into a cramped space and placed in bed next to a naked man of considerable fame. She described his demeanor as casual, "like this was just an average day for him." Her instinctive response was immediate and forceful. "That lion in me, that fire in me … my hair stood on end and I became ferocious," she said. "I was like, 'This is not happening.'"
She managed to escape the room and sought refuge elsewhere on the boat, though she felt trapped by her circumstances. "There was no jumping off and swimming away," she noted. "And there was nobody who was going to be empathetic to my situation."
The betrayal by someone she had placed her confidence in left a lasting emotional mark. "When you really find somebody that you trust, you hold on to them for dear life and you feel so lucky," Panettiere reflected. "So to be betrayed like that is just an awful feeling."
This Is Me: A Reckoning arrives on May 19 and is currently available for pre-order.
