2,600 Uneaten Dinners from White House Correspondents' Dinner Donated to Shelters

April 26, 2026

The surplus food from the 2026 White House Correspondents' Dinner found purpose beyond the ballroom. According to CBS News Senior White House Correspondent Weijia Jiang, roughly 2,600 dinners that were not served ended up going to charitable causes.

The Hilton took steps to ensure the meals could be preserved and distributed. Staff freeze-dried the steak and lobster to extend shelf life before delivering the dinners to two shelters supporting abused women and children. Jiang highlighted the effort in a post to X on Monday, April 27, noting that hotel staff worked through the night under challenging circumstances.

The need for alternative plans arose after an incident at the Washington Hilton forced the evacuation of the ballroom. President Trump and numerous attendees were evacuated over the weekend after shots were fired in the hotel's lobby.

The suspected shooter, identified as 31-year-old Cole Allen, was apprehended and faced charges in court on Monday. He was officially charged with attempting to assassinate Trump along with two federal gun charges.

One moment from the evening captured public attention when a video showed an older man remaining seated at his table, calmly eating his salad while chaos unfolded around him. The man later spoke with TMZ, expressing his appreciation that people found some positive takeaway from the video amid what he described as a "horrific moment."
