After 46 Years Together, Juliet Mills and Maxwell Caulfield Open Up About Their 18-Year Age Gap

Juliet Mills and Maxwell Caulfield stand as proof that significant age differences need not be an obstacle to lasting love in Hollywood.

The pair, separated by 18 years, have now spent 46 years as husband and wife. Both opened up recently on the Still Here Hollywood podcast about how their ages never factored into their connection.

The two met in 1980 while performing together in a stage production of The Elephant Man. At that time, Maxwell was 21 and Juliet was 39. They wed later that same year and have remained together ever since. Today, Maxwell is 66 and Juliet is 84.

During their podcast appearance, both emphasized that the age difference simply wasn't on their radar. "It didn't occur to me and Juliet maintains to this day it didn't really occur to her, either," Maxwell explained. "She had such a youthful quality — always has, always will do — it's presumptuous of me to even think that I was going to, you know, hook up with her. That wasn't really where it was — it just, it happened so fast. It caught us both off guard, needless to say."

Juliet echoed his sentiment, describing their bond as something that transcended conventional thinking. "We didn't think about it. We didn't talk about it, either. It was just two people who just communicated on such a high level or in different ways," she said. "We had so much in common: of course, we were both English, to start with, we're both actors, and we just had a communication instantly. It was like saying 'Hello, where have you just been, I know you,' and I just believe in reincarnation, I do believe in past lives. I believe I knew you in some relationship in another life; that I believe."

Maxwell's career spans several notable roles, including appearances in Grease 2, Empire Records, Dynasty, and The Colbys. Juliet, an Emmy winner and Tony nominee, gained recognition among younger viewers for her role as Tabitha Lenox on the soap opera Passions, and made numerous guest appearances on The Love Boat throughout her career.
