American Idol Season 5 Finalist Mandisa Dies at 47

American Idol is celebrating season five with a special reunion episode airing May 4, 2026, but one notable contestant from that season will not be among those returning: Mandisa, the gospel singer who finished in ninth place.

Mandisa tragically passed away in April 2024 at the age of 47. Her representative confirmed her death at the time, stating: "We can confirm that yesterday Mandisa was found in her home deceased. At this time we do not know the cause of death or any further details. We ask for your prayers for her family and close knit circle of friends during this incredibly difficult time."

According to reports, Mandisa had not been seen for approximately three weeks before she was discovered. Her body was found in a state of decomposition.

The medical examiner's autopsy report attributed her death to "complications of class III obesity." At the time of her death, she weighed 488 pounds.

Following her elimination from American Idol in 2006, Mandisa launched a successful music career. Her debut album, True Beauty, released in 2007, made history by debuting at number one on the Top Christian Album charts—a first for a new female artist in the chart's 27-year history at that time.

Over the following years, Mandisa released five additional albums. In 2014, she earned a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album for her record Overcomer.

Throughout her life, Mandisa had been candid about her mental health struggles. In a 2017 interview, she revealed that she had contemplated suicide following the loss of a close friend. "I was so miserable; I felt so hopeless," she shared. "I am a woman of faith, and I believe that heaven is real, and when I do leave here, I'm going to be in heaven with Jesus. One of the things I started hearing during that dark period was: 'You're in so much pain. If you take your life, you could be in heaven right now with Jesus.'"

However, the medical examiner found no evidence of self-harm in connection with her death.

Mandisa's family and friends remain in the hearts of those who knew and supported her throughout her career.
