Trump Details How He Marked Melania's Birthday Moments After Correspondents' Dinner Incident

April 27, 2026

President Donald Trump opened up about his immediate reaction to his wife's special day in the chaotic hours following an alleged attack at the White House Correspondents' Dinner.

Melania Trump turned 56 on Sunday, April 26, just after she and the 79-year-old president were evacuated from the Washington Hilton when an alleged attacker breached the event where both were present.

Speaking during an appearance on 60 Minutes—which aired on Melania's birthday—Trump shared what transpired once he and the first lady reached safety back at the White House. When journalist Norah O'Donnell asked how he managed to acknowledge her special day "after what happened last night," the president recounted the timing of their return.

"Well, it was… Yeah, by the time we get back here, it's like around 12:00, and I said, 'Happy birthday, darling,'" Trump explained, noting they arrived at the White House right as the clock struck midnight marking the start of her birthday.

During a separate press conference, Trump described the evening as "a rather traumatic experience" for the first lady. He emphasized that "Melania was cognizant" of what was happening and praised her composure, saying "The first lady was doing a terrific job. She loves the country. She recognizes it better than any. But she told me numerous times, she said, 'You are in a dangerous job.'"

Cole Allen, identified as the suspect in the alleged assassination attempt, faced charges at an arraignment on Monday, April 27.

The president and first lady have since redirected their attention to upcoming engagements with distinguished guests.
