Idris Elba Definitively Rules Out James Bond Speculation

Idris Elba has put to rest persistent speculation about a potential future in the James Bond franchise.
The 53-year-old star sat down with People magazine at the Los Angeles premiere of his latest film, Masters of the Universe, on Monday, May 18, where he addressed the recurring conversation about his name surfacing in 007 casting discussions.
When asked about his feelings regarding the repeated mentions in Bond conversations, Elba was direct in his response. "My name's not getting thrown out, no way," he stated. "They're going younger. And I wish them all the luck of the world. I can't wait — it's going to be amazing."
He went further to emphasize his position on the matter: "I'm honestly not in the race ever. I wasn't in the race in the first place."
The Wire actor has previously opened up about the Bond rumors during a 2023 appearance on the Smartless podcast, which is co-hosted by Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Sean Hayes. At that time, he reflected on his complicated relationship with the speculation, explaining how initial flattery eventually gave way to frustration.
"We're all actors and we understand that that role is one of those sort of coveted types," Elba said then. "Essentially, it was a huge compliment that every corner of the world — except for some corners, which we will not talk about — were really happy about the idea that I could be considered."
However, he acknowledged that negative reactions transformed the conversation. "Those that weren't happy about the idea made the whole thing disgusting and off-putting, because it became about race. It became about nonsense, and I got the brunt of it."
In other news, Elba is set to reunite with Chris Hemsworth for Extraction 3, reprising his role from the previous installments in the action franchise.
