Nicola Coughlan Confirms Limited Role in 'Bridgerton' Season 5

Nicola Coughlan has set expectations about her involvement in the next chapter of 'Bridgerton.' The 39-year-old actress, who has played Penelope Bridgerton since the show's debut season, will have a lighter footprint in season five.
Coughlan's character took center stage in season three, which chronicled Penelope and Colin's romance. With a new Lady Whistledown now in place, there had been speculation about Penelope's role moving forward.
"Season five had started filming already, so I won't be in it very much," Coughlan revealed during an April 2026 appearance on the "Dish" podcast. "I'm always happy to come back. I think it's a genuinely lovely job to come back to."
The upcoming season shifts focus to Francesca Bridgerton, the introverted middle daughter played by Hannah Dodd. Two years after her husband John's death, Francesca re-enters the marriage market with practical intentions. That plan becomes complicated when John's cousin Michaela, portrayed by Masali Baduza, arrives in London to manage the Kilmartin estate, stirring up feelings Francesca thought she'd resolved.
Currently in production, season five does not yet have an official release date.
