Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver are set to depart Grey's Anatomy following the season 22 finale, and the penultimate episode delivered a shocking moment for their characters Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman.

Warning: Major spoilers ahead for the April 30 episode

The installment titled "Through the Fire" opened with Owen and Teddy appearing to be in a strong place romantically, having recently worked through relationship difficulties. That stability quickly unravels when Teddy reveals she's contemplating a job opportunity in Paris.

Owen's response falls short of supportive. "Do I have to be the bad guy who tells you not to go?… Just do what you want, like you always do," he tells her. Seeking to make amends, Owen later calls Teddy and leaves a voicemail attempting to smooth things over.

"Teddy, I owe you an apology for last night. I had something I wanted to say, and your news kind of threw me. Let's talk when I get in, if I ever get in. There's a ton of traffic on this bridge…" he says in the message before it cuts to the sound of honking and crashing noises, leaving viewers uncertain whether Owen survived the bridge collapse.

Shonda Rhimes, the show's creator and executive producer, may have already provided insight into what lies ahead. When announcing McKidd and Raver's departures, Rhimes released a statement saying, "Over the years, we have had the privilege of watching Owen and Teddy's love story evolve and deepen – two characters who always seem to find their way back to each other. It is both bittersweet and joyful to give this couple the happy ending their story deserves."

Her reference to a "happy ending" suggests Owen likely survived the incident and that the longtime couple will get their fairytale conclusion.
