'It: Welcome to Derry' Season 2 in Development - Creator Shares What's Coming Next
The creative team behind HBO Max's "It: Welcome to Derry" is pushing ahead with season two, as showrunner Andy Muschietti confirmed they're deep in the development process following the first season's December conclusion.
The new chapter will take place in 1935 and centers around the Bradley Gang, a group of bank robbers who stop in Derry with sinister consequences. Muschietti explained that the gang's story draws inspiration from the real-life Brady Gang, a group of robbers who were executed in the streets of Bangor, Maine.
"We're now working on it, and it's so much fun," Muschietti told Deadline. "The Bradley Gang was a gang of bank robbers that were on their way somewhere and they stopped in Derry to buy some ammo and something horrible happens."
The showrunner outlined the series' trajectory, noting that the first season established foundational events, with season two building around the Bradley Gang storyline and its violent fallout. He indicated that season three would feature the explosion of the Kitchener Iron Works, a catastrophic event during an Easter egg hunt that claims the lives of around a hundred children.
Regarding the show's central supernatural element, Muschietti teased: "It's always there f*cking around, so that much I can tell you."
The Depression Era setting will fundamentally reshape the show's dynamics compared to traditional coming-of-age horror narratives. Rather than the familiar suburban landscape where children ride bikes and disappearances occur, season two will explore a grimmer 1935 landscape marked by economic hardship and survival struggles.
"There's no suburban comfort," Muschietti explained. "The setup will be very different" in this historical period where families faced genuine poverty and desperation.
