The aftermath of James Charles' controversial TikTok video continues to unfold, with the woman at the center of the incident now sharing his private response.

Amber Lendof Vargas, a 30-year-old operations agent at Boston Logan Airport, became the subject of Charles' since-deleted video after she reached out to him via direct message about losing her job when Spirit Airlines shut down this month. The airline's closure resulted in over 17,000 layoffs. In the video, Charles criticized her for sending a link to her GoFundMe campaign, using harsh language to describe her actions.

Following significant public backlash, Charles recorded an apology video. Now Vargas has revealed the private message he sent her alongside that public mea culpa.

"You apologized in private after embarrassing me publicly. But some damage doesn't disappear just because you finally feel guilty. I heard the apology. I just don't accept it," Vargas wrote on TikTok on Wednesday, May 13, accompanying her post with a screenshot of Charles' direct message.

In the message, Charles acknowledged his behavior as "disgraceful and completely unnecessary," expressing remorse for "yelling at and berating someone for asking for help in a shitty situation that was completely out of your control." He also stated he was "so ashamed" and recognized being "disgustingly out of touch."

Charles noted that he had since learned about the experiences of people losing jobs without warning and the challenges of job hunting during mass layoffs. He added that he had donated to her GoFundMe and offered further assistance if needed, while acknowledging that Vargas might not want contact with him again.

The GoFundMe campaign has gained significant traction since the incident, drawing support from hundreds of contributors, including Gypsy Rose Blanchard.

The situation has sparked broader conversations about accountability and the nature of public apologies in the social media age.
