Jeopardy Champion Jamie Ding Speaks Out on Immigration Amid Record Winning Streak
Jamie Ding's remarkable run on Jeopardy came to a close this week after an impressive 31 consecutive victories. The champion's streak ended on Monday, April 27, when he fell to newcomer Greg Shahade, who claimed the title of new champion.
Despite his loss, Ding's time on the show proved lucrative—he accumulated $882,605 in winnings throughout his winning stretch.
Following his departure from the long-running quiz competition, Ding sat down for an interview where he reflected on his experience and addressed broader national concerns. As both an immigrant and person of color, he spoke candidly about what his Jeopardy journey has meant to him personally.
"I kept hearing how it was bringing people together, and I love that very much. I've heard people say, 'It's nice to have something positive on TV!' As an immigrant and a person of color, I was able to become part of the history of an American institution," Ding told People magazine.
He continued with a more serious tone, connecting his achievement to current events. "Jeopardy! really is an institution and America's turning 250 years old and the federal government is going after immigrants in a way unlike anything that we've seen in the recent past. So I hope that immigrants can be seen in a positive light too."
Ding's comments highlight the significance of immigrant representation in American media institutions during a period of heightened immigration policy scrutiny.
