Jimmy Kimmel Defends "Expectant Widow" Joke After Melania Trump's Statement

April 27, 2026

Jimmy Kimmel took to his late-night platform to push back against backlash over a quip he made about Melania Trump ahead of the White House Correspondents' Dinner.

During Monday's edition of Jimmy Kimmel Live, the talk show host tackled the controversy head-on after Melania and Donald Trump both released statements earlier in the day condemning his remarks and calling for his firing from ABC.

The joke in question came from a pretend monologue Kimmel delivered on his show, in which he imagined what he might say if asked to host the dinner. "Look at Melania, so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow," he said, a clear reference to the age gap between the president and the First Lady.

Responding on air, Kimmel opened with levity: "Sometimes, you wake up in the morning and the first lady puts out a statement demanding you be fired from your job. We've all been there, right?"

He then walked through the context of the joke, emphasizing that it was intended as a light roast centered on their significant age difference and what he characterized as her expression when the two are together. "It was not, by any stretch of the definition, a call to assassination," Kimmel said, noting that he has long been vocal about opposing gun violence.

The comedian acknowledged the broader conversation around harmful rhetoric. "I agree that hateful and violent rhetoric is something we should reject," he stated. "I do, and I think a great place to start to dial that back would be to have a conversation with your husband about it."

The remarks came two days after a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents' Dinner over the weekend.
