Joe Manganiello Reveals Seven-Year Health Crisis in Forthcoming Memoir Bloodlines

Joe Manganiello is pulling back the curtain on a health struggle that reshaped his life. The 49-year-old former True Blood star will chronicle his seven-year battle with serious illness in his debut memoir, Bloodlines, arriving October 13.

In conversations with People, Manganiello reflected on the ordeal with unflinching honesty. "It was the most brutally difficult time of my life, one I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy, but also my greatest adventure," he shared.

The actor emphasized the book's potential to reach others facing their own challenges. "I hope that what I went through on this journey can give readers hope that answers and healing may lie for them on the other side of whatever they are fighting through. The process of writing this book gave me the gift of perspective that helped me to see that my suffering was a cocoon from which I would emerge forever changed."

According to the book's description, Manganiello faced a cascade of autoimmune-related conditions that attacked his skin, thyroid, eyes, lungs, and digestive system. The health crisis brought chronic pain, a life-saving organ amputation, and an extended fight for survival—all while medical professionals struggled to provide clear answers about what was happening.

Beyond the medical narrative, the memoir ventures into unexpected territory. As conventional medicine proved insufficient, Manganiello explores an unconventional healing path involving shamans, pagan rituals, ancient mythology, family genealogy, and a rekindled spiritual practice. This investigation led him to trace his own heritage, uncovering connections to an Armenian genocide survivor and exploring ancestral patterns of violence and displacement that mirror experiences shared by others living with chronic illness.

Bloodlines operates on multiple levels, examining illness, inheritance, masculinity, faith, and the identities people construct to survive. The memoir grapples with how the past manifests in the body and shapes the narratives we construct around strength and selfhood. Manganiello writes with what the synopsis describes as "candor and hard-won clarity," crafting what promises to be both a gripping medical narrative and a meditation on loss, legacy, and perseverance.
