John Oliver Lands Guest Spots on 'General Hospital' and 'Days of Our Lives' Following His Soap Opera Pitch

John Oliver is venturing into daytime television. The 49-year-old Last Week Tonight host announced during Sunday's episode (June 28) that he has landed roles on not just one, but two major soap operas, with both sets of episodes premiering this summer.

The late-night personality will first appear on General Hospital in a three-episode arc, followed by a week-long stint on Days of Our Lives.

The development marks the fulfillment of Oliver's earlier pitch to the soap opera world. Back in March, he made his ambitions clear: "To all the soap operas out there, let me say this: I am officially offering myself to you. Write me a role, and I will be on your set so fast, it will make your head spin."

Oliver's General Hospital debut is set for Thursday, July 2, with additional episodes airing Friday, July 3, and Monday, July 6. General Hospital executive producer Frank Valentini praised the collaboration in a statement, noting Oliver's professionalism on set. "When John Oliver publicly threw down the gauntlet and said he wanted to appear on a soap, we didn't hesitate for a second," Valentini said. "He was everything you'd hope he'd be: prepared, professional, funny, and genuinely kind to everyone on set. He plays an integral character in the story, and I can't wait for fans to see who he crosses paths within Port Charles."

Oliver reciprocated the enthusiasm, saying in his own statement, "General Hospital was everything I hoped it would be. It's a true honor to be a small stain on the history of this illustrious show."

During Sunday's broadcast, Oliver revealed that his interest in soap operas had intensified after seeing ESPN's Stephen A. Smith make a General Hospital appearance. "I was filled with scorching-hot jealousy," he confessed on air.

Oliver laid out specific requirements for his soap opera role: a character with an outlandish name, a compelling storyline involving dramatic elements like murder or confrontation, and a striking close-up shot of his face. "To be clear: soap opera-acting is not my Plan B," he emphasized. "I simply offered my hypothetical acting abilities to any soap that would meet my terms."

His Days of Our Lives engagement represents another major milestone. "I am happy to say that I've already taped a week of episodes on Days of Our Lives, which is clearly a huge honor," Oliver shared. "It's been home to some of the most renowned soap opera actors, like Deidre Hall, Susan Seaforth Hayes and John Aniston. It's also featured guest appearances from legends like Dick Van Dyke, Betty White and now me."

The Days of Our Lives episodes featuring Oliver are scheduled to air on August 11, 12, and 14.
