John Travolta Explains His Signature Beret Look During 'Propeller' Press Run, Makes L.A. Premiere Appearance with Daughter Ella

John Travolta has made the beret his calling card throughout the promotional circuit for his directorial effort "Propeller One-Way Night Coach," and the veteran actor is now sharing his reasoning behind the distinctive fashion choice.
At the Los Angeles premiere on Thursday, May 28, the 72-year-old spoke candidly about his evolving style philosophy. Travolta explained to Variety that his wardrobe now includes 12 berets, a deliberate departure from his typical appearance.
"The beret has been around for 800 years," Travolta noted, pointing to its military heritage and historical significance. He described reviewing decades of his own photographs and finding them indistinguishable from one another, which prompted a shift in his thinking about personal presentation. "I looked up all the old school directors and they all had berets and sometimes glasses and it was very it was cliché but in a wonderful way — they were probably reflecting painters and musicians of the type," he said.
The actor also touched on broader conversations around fashion and self-expression. "Guys don't have enough to do. They're putting men in skirts because there's a lack of something there…why not change it up? We can have fun too," Travolta remarked.
Joining him at the premiere was his daughter Ella Bleu Travolta, who appears in the film. The cast also included Clark Shotwell, Kelly Eviston-Quinnett, Olga Hoffmann, Alina Rose Armstrong, and Edouard Philipponnat.
The film itself takes viewers back to aviation's golden age, following a young plane enthusiast named Jeff and his mother as they embark on a cross-country one-way journey to Hollywood. The narrative captures their experience through airline meals, flight attendants, unexpected layovers, and first-class glimpses, chronicling how the voyage shapes the protagonist's trajectory. Travolta directed the project and also narrates while appearing as an older version of the main character.
"Propeller One-Way Night Coach" is currently available to stream on Apple TV.
Ella is Travolta's daughter with his late wife, Kelly Preston, who passed away in 2020 at age 57 following a breast cancer diagnosis.
