Jonah Hill on Relocating to San Diego: Building a Life Away From Hollywood

April 26, 2026

Jonah Hill is opening up about his move away from the entertainment capital.

The Superbad star, now 42, discussed his family's relocation during a live recording of the SmartLess podcast on Saturday, April 25. The conversation centered on his deliberate choice to exit Los Angeles and settle in a small San Diego community alongside his wife, Olivia Millar.

"So I live in a very small town in San Diego, and it's amazing, and my neighbors are incredible people," Hill shared during the taping. "And when we had our first kid, we moved out there three years ago."

The actor emphasized that raising his family outside of Los Angeles was a key motivation behind the move. He expressed particular appreciation for his tight-knit community, noting that his neighbors treat him with normalcy rather than celebrity fascination.

"I wanted to leave L.A. and raise a family outside of Los Angeles," he explained. "They never treat me weird or ask me about my job or anything. And my neighbor is one of my great friends, Dr. Sean, he never asked. He's here tonight. He never bothered me or was like, 'Oh, what's this person like?'"

Hill reflected fondly on his own childhood in Los Angeles during the 1990s, recalling an era of greater cultural accessibility and freedom. "I grew up here. L.A. was such a cool place to grow up in the '90s because you could go skateboard downtown or you could sneak into a movie premiere or you could go sneak into a comedy club and see Chris Rock or something," he reminisced.

He highlighted the unique blend of entertainment industry proximity and underground culture that defined his youth. "You had access to show business stuff, but you had access to punk and skating and graffiti and all the naughty stuff. And there was no internet. It was just so awesome."
