Justin Theroux Reveals How His Pit Bull Kuma Has Adapted to Newborn Son
Justin Theroux is settling into fatherhood and opening up about how his household has transformed since welcoming his first child with wife Nicole Brydon Bloom.
The 54-year-old actor stopped by the TODAY show on Thursday to discuss life with his newborn son, touching on how his longtime canine companion has taken to the newest family member. Theroux adopted pit bull Kuma in 2018, and the beloved dog has become a fixture at red carpet events and public appearances alongside him.
When asked about Kuma's behavior around the baby, Theroux glowed with praise. "Oh she's perfect. She's really perfect, gentle. Her energy is great," he shared during the interview. The actor emphasized that he's seen no signs of aggression or territorial behavior from the dog.
"No! She is so sweet," Theroux said. "Honestly, she reads the room. She's very tender."
He painted a touching picture of how Kuma has positioned herself as a protective presence. "We'll bring him into the room and she'll just sort of post up near us, keep her eye on the door and makes sure nobody comes in," he explained.
Theroux didn't hold back when discussing his own experience as a new father. The Emmy winner expressed pure joy at the experience, describing intimate moments with his son. "I just love looking into his eyeballs. It's just beautiful, it's just a wonderful thing," he said.
He acknowledged the reality of early parenthood—the sleepless nights and constant vigilance. "We're in that period now, of course, where it's a lot of just quiet tiptoeing around the house, beautiful, occasional crying. Yeah, it's wonderful."
During the segment, Theroux also gave a heartfelt nod to his 32-year-old wife, crediting her with the demanding work of caring for a newborn. "She's the one doing the Herculean task of feeding," he noted, adding that the experience of parenthood has exceeded his expectations.
Reflecting on conversations with other fathers, Theroux recalled being told that fatherhood would transform him. "I've been told by other fathers, 'Wait until you see this child. You're gonna fall in love,'" he recounted. "And you still always have that little moment of like, 'Is that really going to happen?'"
That moment came, and it changed everything. "And the minute he appears, your whole life just starts to revolve around this thing, and your heart just opens up in a beautiful way," Theroux said. "So I'm really happy, really happy."
