Katy Perry has responded with humor to Josh Groban's engagement announcement, posting a playful video that circles back to a long-standing connection between the two entertainers.

The pop star shared footage of herself jokingly crying while listening to her hit song "The One That Got Away," a reference to her previous disclosure that the track was inspired by Groban. Perry and Groban dated briefly in 2009, and despite their romantic history, they've maintained a friendship over the years.

Groban is now engaged to Natalie McQueen, a musical theatre actress.

The "One That Got Away" revelation came during a livestream event in 2017 when Perry was promoting her Witness album. She told viewers that Groban was the person the song referenced.

When Groban learned about this on Watch What Happens Live in September 2018, he expressed genuine surprise. "I was not expecting that," he said. "That was a double take and a spit of my coffee when I saw that. It's very sweet of her to say that. I'm very flattered by it. But I was very surprised by it too."

Groban wasn't entirely convinced the song fit his actual story. "I listened to the lyrics of the song. And I'm like, 'I never owned a Mustang. I don't have a tattoo. Are you sure that's about me?'" he explained.

Discussing their 2009 breakup, Groban reflected on their compatibility. "We were both very private and we realized we were better as friends and we've been very, very good friends to this day. She's the best," he shared. At that time, he also ruled out any romantic reunion, noting that both were in relationships.
