Kevin Spacey Discusses Career Trajectory During Podcast Appearance, Says Public Perception Shifting

The 66-year-old American Beauty star made an appearance on Bill Maher's Club Random podcast to address where his career stands following years of sexual misconduct allegations.

During the conversation, Spacey reflected on his current reception in the industry. "I feel much more welcomed, and I think that things are moving in the direction that we hoped they were moving in," he said.

He addressed specific allegations, particularly highlighting the resolution of the case involving actor Anthony Rapp. "There are certain cases where part of something is true, but it's been rethought, it's been redesigned, or it's been entirely made up, certainly in the case of Anthony Rapp, which is a case that we won in federal court in New York," Spacey explained. Rapp had alleged in 2017 that Spacey assaulted him in his New York apartment when he was a teenager. A New York jury found Spacey not guilty on all counts.

When Maher noted the volume of allegations over the years, suggesting there was significant public doubt about Spacey's claims of innocence, Spacey pushed back on the characterization of his situation. "I never said there was no fire. It just wasn't a raging forest fire. It was a small kitchen fire that could have been put out with an extinguisher," he responded.

As Maher observed that Spacey remained in what he called "show business jail," the actor countered that his circumstances had improved. "I feel less in jail than I did. When people look at things…when people actually start to hear the facts, understand what we won in courts, I think people now look at this and think, maybe nine years has been enough," Spacey said. He drew a comparison to sports, noting that if he were an athlete, a similar suspension would likely have concluded by now. "If I had been a sports figure I would have been benched for seven games. That's what happens…if you're hitting home runs, they want you on the field," he added.

Spacey's return to the public eye has included appearances at high-profile events. He attended the Cannes Film Festival recently, continuing his participation in major industry gatherings. The previous year, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the amfAR Cannes Gala, where he delivered remarks about blacklisting in the entertainment industry and his hopes that history will not repeat itself.
