King Charles and Queen Camilla Begin U.S. State Visit with White House Reception
King Charles and Queen Camilla launched their official U.S. state visit on Monday with a formal White House reception, marking the monarch's first trip to America since ascending to the throne.
The British royals touched down at Joint Base Andrews shortly before 3 p.m. ET on April 27, then changed into fresh attire before proceeding to the White House, arriving just after 4 p.m. ET. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump greeted the couple outside the residence, where the two pairs posed for photographs before heading indoors for tea.
Charles has visited the United States on at least 19 occasions since his first trip to the country at age 21. The day's itinerary also included an evening garden reception at the British Embassy, attended alongside the U.K. ambassador to the United States.
White House spokesperson Anna Kelly outlined the significance of the visit ahead of the arrival. "President Trump has always had great respect for King Charles, and their relationship was further strengthened by the president's historic visit to the United Kingdom last year," Kelly said. "The president looks forward to a special visit by Their Majesties, which will include a beautiful state dinner and multiple events throughout the week."
The week-long visit encompasses several official engagements and concludes with a formal state dinner.
