La Toya Jackson Explains Janet's Absence From Upcoming Michael Jackson Biopic

April 21, 2026

La Toya Jackson has shed light on why her younger sister Janet Jackson is missing from the forthcoming Michael Jackson biopic.

The 69-year-old performer appears in the film herself, with actress Jessica Sula taking on her role. Yet despite Janet's close relationship with the late King of Pop, she does not feature in the movie.

Speaking at the Los Angeles premiere of Michael this week alongside other family members, La Toya discussed the decision during a red carpet interview. "I wish everybody was in the movie," she told Variety's Marc Malkin. "She was asked and she kindly declined so you have to respect her wishes."

Director Antoine Fuqua also commented on Janet's non-appearance in the project. "I have so much respect and love for Janet, but you know it's OK. She's supportive of Jaafar and that's what matters," Fuqua explained.

La Toya went on to commend her nephew Jaafar Jackson, who takes the lead role as Michael. "Jaafar was absolutely fabulous. I'm sure you've seen the movie and you know how wonderful he is, how we all forget and think that we're watching Mike," she said. "It's like, 'Oh, I forgot this is Jaafar.' So, he really delivered and he did a fabulous job."

The Jackson family has largely embraced the biopic, with multiple siblings attending premiere events and supporting the endeavor. Michael's sons Prince and Bigi have also made public appearances for the film, and Prince alongside other family members serve as executive producers.

The movie arrives in theaters on April 24.
