Lea Michele to Resume Broadway Role in 'Chess' After Medical Clearance

Lea Michele is set to take the stage again in Broadway's Chess on Friday night, marking her return after a four-show absence caused by illness.

The actress had missed all performances since Tuesday, when Tony Awards nominations were unveiled. Medical professionals have now given her clearance to resume her role in the revival.

"She's been sick since late last week. She will be back in the show tomorrow as she's been cleared by her doctor," a source confirmed.

According to reports, Michele developed laryngitis that progressed into bronchitis, prompting the temporary hiatus from her starring role.

Since October 2025, Michele has anchored the successful revival, performing alongside Aaron Tveit and Nicholas Christopher. The production itself earned five Tony nominations this year.

Notably, Michele did not receive a nomination in the Best Actress category, despite widespread critical expectations that she would be recognized. She nonetheless voiced her support for all five nominees across social media platforms.

Michele's run in the production continues through June 21. Following her departure, singer JoJo, known for the track "Leave (Get Out)," will step into the role of Florence Vassy.
